 About

The First Note

All inquiring students should schedule a free new student interview. This is an opportunity to meet face to face, ask questions, and evaluate the student's abilities.

What can I expect?

Children ages 5-6 will be given a readiness evaluation to determine fine and gross motor skills, reading and math abilities, and basic aural mimicry.

Students >age 7 will be evaluated for previous music instruction and should bring any music they would like to demonstrate which showcases their current abilities.

Questions regarding instruments and scheduling will also be addressed.

Teach In Harmony

Talk to me! If you see something in your child's practicing which you think would be helpful for me to know about, don't hesitate to call or text. I am interested in providing for your child the most positive musical experience and opportunity to learn about one of our greatest musical instruments--the piano. I see myself as a team member with you in the education and promotion of music to each student. Remember, not every student learns the same way, nor at the same pace. Sometimes adaptation of course work will be required in order to maintain a child’s interest or allow complete mastering of musical skills. The student should like to play the piano. It’s my goal to make that happen with every student!

Where is the studio?

My new studio location is in the Brittany Lakes neighborhood at my home in Wilmington, NC (in Murrayville). I teach lessons on a baby grand piano and a digital Roland in my studio. It is a very informal setting and my children frequent the area, although are pretty good about not interrupting. Parents are welcome to stay and observe lessons while I teach. If you have multiple children, my home and subdivision is very kid-friendly. Please be mindful of your children if they are on the property but not in the studio.

Parking:

Temporary street or grass parking is permitted. Driveway parking is preferred.

I also have a studio in Onslow County but am not currently accepting new students there at this time. If you would like to get on the wait-list for Onslow County, please contact me! This studio will be opening a new location by the end of the year (hopefully!) in Holly Ridge.

Who am I?

I have been a local piano teacher for about 19 years, serving in Maryland, California, and now, North Carolina. I truly believe that music is a fundamental expression of the heart and I am honored to be able to share my love of music with those I teach, their families, and the community we perform in.

While my extended family is spread out from Alaska and Washington, my children are here in North Carolina. I have played piano and organ professionally for my church and other church parishes for 19 years. I have studied under music professors in Maryland, as well as under my mother, Susan Thompson, who was an elementary school music teacher in Camas, WA for many years. I also have children of my own. My full time work is as an Administrator for a local church, a Realtor, and a piano teacher. I offer accompaniment, solos, and music for special events, such as weddings, funerals, adjudication, and religious services. I also love to volunteer in the community, garden, paint, participate in community theatre, and sing.

I’d love to hear from you!
